Stichting Dierenhulp Kreta is opgericht om locale projecten op Kreta te ondersteunen die actief zijn op het gebied van dierenwelzijn. Zij verzorgen, verplegen en trachten een mentaliteitsverandering te bewerkstelligen ten aanzien van de dieren die tot op de dag van vandaag verwaarloosd en mishandeld worden. Stichting Dierenhulp Kreta wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers.

Onze stichting is afhankelijk van donaties, wij hebben uw steun dan ook hard nodig.

Sitia 1 september 2010: vier weggegooide pups van een week oud..

Ik kreeg vanmiddag een smsje van Peter Erades in Sitia wat alleen dit zei: “4 puppies in de vuilnisbak oogjes dicht”. Dan weet ik dat ik hem moet bellen en het was inderdaad weer eens raak. Peter werd gebeld door een vuilnisman in Sitia die 4 puppies in een zak in een container had gevonden. Ze zijn net een week oud en de oogjes zijn nog dicht. Peter en Andi zijn ze gaan halen en vanavond gaan ze naar de dierenarts om ze te laten euthanaseren. Lees het verslag van Andi..

"Look at the first picture; this is the beach road in Sitia, Crete. Maybe you think it looks like a nice place for a holiday but you are wrong, this is Hell. Look again and you will see a rubbish bin by the side of the road. The second picture is the bag taken from the rubbish bin by a street cleaner this morning.

This morning a street cleaner telephoned Peter to tell him they had found some live puppies in a rubbish bin. The street cleaner took the bag out of the rubbish and put it in the shade of a tree. This is the only small positive in this story, the street cleaner took them out of the bin or by now they have been crushed alive and are in a land fill site with only the person who did this ever knowing these small lives existed. From now on the story is all bad, the street cleaner works for the local authority who are responsible for animal welfare by the Greek Law but can the street cleaner tell there employer, No, they don't care, they don't do anything for the animals, in fact they even send the street cleaners out early in the morning to pick up the dead bodies when there has been poisoning so as not to upset the tourists, this is the daily reality in Crete . The street cleaner did not contact the local Animal Welfare organisation because either they don't know it exists or they know they will do nothing, either way they contacted Peter because they know he cares about the animals.

Now we have the puppies, there are four, about one week old with their eyes closed. To survive they would need to be fed by hand every few hours, this is really hard work even with one puppy, we know we have done it many times. Unfortunately there are very few people living in Crete who care and even less people prepared to help. Later today we will take them to the Animal Doctor to be humanely euthanized, this is the only option.

How many times a day does this happen in Crete and nobody knows about it? Cats and Dogs in Crete are treated as garbage to be thrown away if not wanted."

Cretan Cat-a-List stroomt vol met kittens en gewonde katten

Deze week hebben wij 200 euro overgemaakt naar Cretan Cat-a-List voor de onkosten die ze maken voor de vele kittens en gewonde katten die ze in juli en augustus binnen hebben gekregen. Hier een aantal voorbeelden:

Noggin: gedumpt op de parkeerplaats bij de Lidl in zeer slechte conditie.

Noggin toen hij gevonden werd.

Noggin zoals hij nu is.

Julio: Gevonden door Duitse toeristen die geen plek voor hem konden vinden in Heraklion en 150km hebben gereden om hem naar Cretan Cat a List te brengen.

Fritzie: Ook gevonden door toeristen in zeer slechte conditie en moest een spoedoperatie ondergaan en is later nog een keer geopereerd aan zijn poot en beschadigde oog. Er zijn nog vervolgoperaties nodig en hij is ook positief getest voor FLV

Minstral: Gevonden met een beschadigd oog en moest een spoedoperatie ondergaan, helaas is ook zijn andere ook beschadigd en verblijft hij nu in een cattery zodat ze kunnen kijken hoe hij het doet met het zicht in zijn oog.

Blinde kat met 4 kittens: Werd binnengebracht en gaf de volgende dag geboorte aan 4 kittens.

Wij kregen een mail van Joan McKenzie van PAWS Crete. Ik kon mijn ogen niet geloven toen ik de foto's zag. Dit is niet in één nacht ontstaan. Hoe konden de mensen zo aan haar voorbij lopen zonder haar te helpen..

"Daniela and I went to collect the puppies when I finished my early shift at the bar at 6pm and expected to be home by 7 to spend some time sorting out the kennel options before going to work at 9pm.

On the way home with the pups we saw this German Shepherd wandering in the middle of the road at the busy traffic lights. You could see all her bones and her legs were collapsing under her and we couldn't leave her there. It took half an hour to catch her (she was so afraid she wouldn't stop walking) while the cars were swerving around us and blowing their horns and shouting.

The car was full with the pups and dog food etc and I had the bench I was lending Peter for today. The only way to get the Shepherd in the car was to take the bench out, which I did. When I went back to get it later it had been stolen.

Now I have her people are saying they had heard about her wandering around for over a month - how could people leave her on the street like that?

She is beautiful - she just breaks your heart to look into her big, sad, innocent eyes - it makes me cry just thinking about her. I can't believe she lived 9 years in hell.

I think she will be ok - she seems a little better as the hours pass and being near other dogs really helps - she's just a big mother and wants to be with the puppies - she will when she is clear to be with them.”

We didn't know if the Shepherd (Casey) would make it through the night but she did and we took her to the vet this morning. Her blood tests were clear and it looks like she has just been starved and dehydrated, almost to death. She is 8 or 9 years old - her face doesn't look that old to me but her teeth are a mess and her claws are longer than I've ever seen (getting them cut next week) - her feet are a mess and she has hair missing all over and sores and growths on her which the vet said are not cancer or leishmania but just from the conditions she was kept in and the lack of nutrition. It took half an hour for the vet to find a vein on her to draw blood.

Tonight she is a little brighter so I really hope she will recover so we can try to make up for the 8 or 9 years of hell she has lived through.

She is so sad but very sweet and gentle. She absolutely loves other dogs and puppies and she actually smiled when we got back from the vet and she saw the puppies.”

Wij ontvingen een mail van Jutta die tijdens het uitlaten van haar honden een verschrikkelijke ontdekking deed:

Hello together,

I`m shocked-yesterday in the late evening i take a walk with my dogs-it`s a little bit outside from Makri-Gialos-Pilalimata- and when were finished, my dogs began to run away and make a lot of noise. I shout them to come back, but they didn`t! So I have to go, where they are-and then this! OK-my nose won`t to smell it-it was horrible. And after that, 3 Puppies began to shout-but when I call them, they run away.

So I take my dogs home and go again to the Puppies and bring them water and food. Also in the morning. They are so shy-i can`t take them. I´m afraid now, that they will be murdered also. So, what can I do?N

ext week, I go for one week to Germany. One Puppy is white and teh two others are black with brown.I need help!!!

And I can`t take them to my home, because for 2 weeks the Brother of Chrssa is died of Parvovirose.Please, say me, what I can do now!

Dixie - het heeft helaas niet zo mogen zijn

Vanavond ontving ik het trieste nieuws dat Dixie is overleden.

"Hi Diane,

Dixie died. I got a call from Barbara and Joe who are fostering her at 9pm tonight to say they think she ate something and it was stuck in her throat and they were giving her salt and water to make her sick. Daniela and I got there ten minutes later and she was already dead. She didn't look or feel dead - it's all unreal.

Joe said she was always picking up crap on the walk and tonight she had something and he told her to drop it but he doesn't know if she swallowed it or if she swallowed a bit of their rosebush and it stuck in her throat.

I keep thinking I could have forced whatever it was out of her throat - the symptoms were not like poisoning.

After all she survived - being run over, having two operations and blockage in her intestine. The last operation was just last Monday. What was the point??

I am so sorry you did all you could to help her and we couldn't keep her alive.

I was going to take her back yesterday but they said she was fine and settling in so they would keep her until she was adopted.

Why did she survive all that for nothing??

So much for me feeling optimistic.

Helaas gebeuren er dingen in het leven die onverklaarbaar en onwerkelijk zijn. Waarom op deze manier sterven als je al zoveel in je jonge leven hebt overwonnen, wordt dan het eten van een stukje rozenstruik je fataal, wie had dat kunnen denken.

Dixie het ga je goed in het hiernamaals...
